What do I do if I am concerned about a student?Of the many ways we identify students who may have speech and language disorders, teacher referrals are the most important. Teachers are able to compare a student to other students in the class and grade level. Your instincts are our best resource. Children develop in different ways but we do have some general developmental norms as well as district guidelines. Your first step should be to check these norms below. If you feel a student needs further evaluation, contact the Speech Language Pathologist in your school. You will need to do RTI activities for a minimum of two weeks. Once these are finished, the SLP will request permission from the parent to evaluate the student. Following evaluation, the SLP, the parent, the LEA and you will meet to discuss the results of the evaluation and recommendations for the student.
